Winter Training Challenge

We at Topo Adventure Sports invite you to participate in the inaugural Topo Winter Training Challenge! The Challenge is intended to help keep you motivated during the off season and enter the 2009 AR season as ready as you’ve ever been. It’s also intended to be a bit of fun as different cities, states, message boards, and teams can compete for bragging rights!
The Topo Winter Training Challenge runs from November 15, 2008, through February 28, 2009 (104 days). If you choose to participate, we’ll send you a link to a Google Spreadsheet where you can track your workouts. There are four different goal levels that you can choose to shoot for:

• BRONZE LEVEL - an average of 3 training sessions per week (45 total workouts)
• SILVER “Sprint” LEVEL - an average of 5 training sessions per week (75 total workouts)
• GOLD “24-Hour” LEVEL - an average of 7 training sessions per week (104 total workouts)
• PLATINUM “Expedition” LEVEL - an average of 10 training sessions per week (149 total workouts)
The emphasis in this challenge is consistency. A “training session” consists of any 30-minute or longer aerobic activity. It doesn’t matter how fast you are in this session, so whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned veteran, it’s all about training time.

We will have a Google spreadsheet that will pull in the training challenge entries from each person and we’ll publish the top performers on the Topo Adventure Sports website. In addition to individuals, we also plan to compare states to each other (Ohio vs. Michigan vs. Indiana, etc.), and maybe individual groups as well (Infiterra Message Board vs. IndianaAR vs. TopoAdventureSports, etc.).

Ladies, if you have been considering signing up for NSAAR 2008 women’s only adventure race, don’t wait any longer! This is a great race for all comers with a very laid back atmosphere. The course is designed for people of all ability levels and the race location will be providing some real challenges this year. Whether you’re an experienced AR maven looking to introduce a friend to the sport, a total novice, or a team of “buff betty’s” looking for a challenge, this race WILL meet your needs.

Gentlemen, now is the perfect opportunity to convince those ladies to give the sport a try. Whether it’s a significant other, a coworker, a friend, or just a potential future teammate to allow you to finally race coed in the future, this is the event to get them hooked on the sport!

Central Ohio Adventure Racing’s last 2008 race will occur on sept 13th. We have it all in this race. Navigation, Ropes, Paddling, Mountain Biking and Swimming. Solo’s and teams of 2-4. The price is $55 per person and $25 per rental canoe. We have alot of prizes for the last race including T-shirts, Gels, Headlamps, Hats, hydration products and a grand prize of a Garmin Fortrex 201 Trainer GPS.

National Orienteering Day

It’s time for you adventure racers to start thinking about who you will invite to try orienteering at this year’s National Orienteering Day meets, September 13th at Southwestway Park, and September 14th at the Orchard School. These meets are intended for beginner orienteers, so bring your families, invite your co-workers, tell your friends.

If you’ve never tried orienteering before…

There will be a clinic offered before each of the meets to teach you to use a compass and read the maps. Bring a compass if you have one, or you can borrow one of ours. No need to register, just show up and we’ll help you get started. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes for hiking. The cost is $10 for a non-member and you can take a small group along for that one price, or buy additional maps for $2 each.

Orienteering clinic: 9:45AM

Start: 10AM -Noon

Central Ohio Adventure Racing will be at Caesar Creek state park near Wilmington, Oh for “The Games At Caesar Creek”. This 6hr AR will comprise Paddling, Mountain Biking and Orienteering. COAR has several great sponsors in RailRiders, Hammer Nutrition, NuuN, Headsweats and Princeton-tec who have all supplied swag and prizes.

When? July 19th, 8:00 am, at the Caesar Creek State Park Campground.

How much? $45 per person, $25 per canoe/kayak, $3 parking fee.

2008 Indianapolis Crossroads Orienteering Metrogaine

The Metrogaine is an urban scavenger hunt in downtown Indianapolis. You choose the 2 hour course on foot or bike or the 4 hour course on foot, mark your maps, and then go out and try to collect the most points in the allotted time. Rather than punching your card at a control, you will be looking for the answers to the questions you’re given. Some checkpoints will be worth more points than others, so strategy will be important! Arrive early to register, mark your maps, and plan your strategy.We will be starting from the Waterfront Pavillion at White River State Park

Cost: $20 members, $30 non-members

Congratulations to Alpine Shop who won Saturday’s 2008 MISSION Adventure Race after trailing nearly all day by 30 minutes to Citgo / Gray Goat. A strategic skipping of two checkpoints boosted Alpine Shop into the lead at about sunset. They continued racing hard until just a short time before the midnight finish cutoff. Their score was 37 points, Citgo / Gray Goat scored 34. Third overall went to DART, and fourth overall to a 2-female team All-Terrain Females. Darryl McCauley topped the solo field with 28 points.

MISSION Lite introduced nearly 100 first-timers to adventure racing. Leading that race were Running on MT with 12 points, followed by Greg and Two Old Men just minutes ahead of Three Cam Unit, each scoring 10 points.

SleepMonsters and TrackMe360 SPOT New Opportunities

SleepMonsters and TrackMe360 are now working in partnership to maximise the benefits and potential of the new SPOT Satellite Messengers in tracking adventure racing.

After pioneering the first use of SPOT in an international race at the Baja Travesia last month, preparations are now underway for coverage of this month’s Florida Coast to Coast race and the Untamed New England race in June, with live tracking maps and instant leader-board updates.

Until now race tracking via satellite was limited to a few big budget races a year, but the launch of the SPOT device heralds a revolutionary change in race management, safety and media coverage. SleepMonsters and TrackMe360 are taking the lead on this, working closely with SPOT so that racers, supporters and Race Directors can now benefit from more accessible and affordable race tracking and live event reporting.

Mats Jansson quickly saw the potential of using SPOT in adventure racing and established TrackMe360 to rent out SPOTs to races, ensuring they didn’t have to subscribe to the annual satellite time contract, which is the primary cost of the SPOT service.

“For racers the SPOT devices are easy to carry and use, and ensure their position is known and that they can call for help if needed. That safety cover is of vital importance to Race Directors, and there is the added advantage of positional tracking for effective race management,” said Jansson.

The partnership with SleepMonsters began with the development of their existing race leaderboard to enable teams in Baja Travesia to signal their position on arrival at a checkpoint. The race leaderboard then updated … provided they were in the right location!

After recent work with SPOT this process is now more easily implemented for future races, and supported by positional mapping of teams, ensuring online race coverage is instantly updated.

“We’ve successfully used mobile phone networks to update leaderboards at every transition during our World Championship coverage,” said Rob Howard, Managing Editor of SleepMonsters, “but this was the first time we’ve been able to use satellite communication to mark a teams arrival at every checkpoint.

“The SPOT messengers are lighter and smaller than previous satellite trackers, and with TrackMe360 making them much more affordable we expect to see them used extensively for race tracking and timing on SleepMonsters in the future.

“This is great news for race followers and for everyone involved in adventure racing; teams, sponsors and race organisers. We already provide extensive race coverage, and our service and technical support are free to races. Now the partnership with TrackMe360 will add a new dimension to our race coverage.”
