SMAC WILL HOST 10-HOUR ADVENTURE RACE IN JULY

Ann Arbor, Mich. – Adventure junkies and even those just looking for a new challenge can head out to Huron Meadows Metropark south of Brighton, Mich., on July 20 – 21, 2007, for South Michigan Adventure Club’s XL Adventure Race. The 10-hour race, which is sponsored by Salomon North America, Suunto, SealSkinz, E-Caps/Hammer Gel and the South Michigan Orienteering Club, will be suitable for seasoned racers and beginners. Racers will navigate a course on foot, mountain bike and canoe using their navigation skills and strategy to collect check points (CPs). Participants’ physical abilities will also be tested with special obstacles like a fixed ropes course and other surprises along the way. “This is the fourteenth adventure race that the club has organized,” said Paul Piorkowski, director of SMAC. “The feedback has always been that we produce great events and racers can rest assure that this year will be even better than before.”

Last year racers were surprised with a run that required one teammate to be blindfolded, a swim in the dark and canoeing with mountain bikes in the boat. “Everything will be different this year, though,” Piorkowski warned. “Be ready for the unexpected!” Prizes, which will be determined closer to the race date, will be awarded in each division.

Teams of two made up of either males, females or coed, can find out more about the event and register for the race online at www.smacworld.com. All SMAC events depend heavily on volunteers to work before, during and after the race. Those who might not be ready to race but want to see what it is all about, or those who just like to spend the day out in one of

Michigan’s beautiful parks can volunteer. Contact Lillian Ruiz, volunteer coordinator, at lillianruizhomecare@comcast.net to help out race weekend.
