Checkpoint Zero, LLC Announces National Adventure Racing Points Series
Adventure racing pioneer, Checkpoint Zero, LLC expanded its role in the sport today when it unveiled a new and unique adventure racing points series. The Checkpoint Tracker National Points Series brings together 11 events produced by eight proven race promoters from across the United States. The series is a first for the sport of adventure racing, as all events will provide detailed online coverage, while the race is in progress, using Checkpoint Zero’s innovative, web-based race management application at CheckpointTracker.com.
The series includes nine events that range from 24 to 36 hours in duration and two expedition length races, the Infiterra Sports Michigan eXpedition Race (the MIX) and the Gravity Play Sports AdventureXstream Expedition.
Teams earn points at each series event based on official rankings according to a published points schedule. To compensate for the larger point values of the two expedition races, they will each be counted as two of the four finishes that will determine each team’s points total at the end of the season.
The series will culminate with a finale at the end of September that will see teams battling for final points at two different races taking place concurrently in different parts of the country, the AdventureXstream Expedition in Moab, UT and the Berryman Adventure 36-Hour Adventure Race in Van Buren, MO.
“I’d been kicking around the idea of pulling together a series since the fall of 2005,” commented Paul “Yak” Angell. “For the better part of 2006 I remained convinced that it was not something I wanted to tackle for a variety of reasons. However, as the 2006 season came to a close, it began to dawn on me that the changes we’re seeing in the sport lately have created a bit of a vacuum and ultimately that a series based on the online coverage and the resulting body of spectators provided by Checkpoint Tracker was feasible. I decided immediately this series had to be self-sustaining so that it could persist on the support of the participating race promoters alone. For that reason, I had to be very selective with regard to who would be involved. I believe all of the promoters that I’m working with are among the best in the country.”
